LaGuardia Community College received a grant to develop career awareness among the current students in different majors/disciplines. The Language and Culture Studies, which includes such majors as Latin American Studies, Japanese, and Spanish-English Translation, is currently recruiting alumni and current students who are interested in participating in our mentorship program in Fall 2021 (from November to December 2021) as well as Spring 2022.

The Language and Culture Mentorship Program will pair an alumnus/alumnae and a current student in the same major or discipline and engaged in various career development activities. Possible career development activities include but not limited to:

  1. A tour to the 4-year institution campus (if an alumnus/ae is currently studying at 4-year school) or workplace (if an alumnus/ae is already in workforce)
  2. Participating in a short-term internship experience at the alumnus/ae’s workplace
  3. Visiting a work-related event (e.g., an exhibition, a training session, or public outreach/volunteer events)
  4. Visiting a cultural performance event (e.g., art exhibition, cultural exhibitions, theater performance etc)
  5. Any career-related activity appropriate or beneficial for the current career

We are hoping to have 2-3 active (hopefully in-person) engagements with the student paired with you in November and December 2021. Each activity should be at least 2 hours long. In-person activities are preferred, but virtual activities are also acceptable (e.g., virtual museum visit etc). Activities should be documented (e.g., taking photos, writing a short reflection etc) so that we can introduce our students’ experience through our social media platform. Both alumni and student will be compensated for each event ($100 per event for an alumnus/a and $25 per event for a student).
